Get Smitten By Lecce In 27 Photos
Lecce is a city that enamours you in an instant. It’s an obvious historic jewel of Southern Italy. As you begin to amble through its intriguing lanes, the fragments of olden times beckon you to soak in the era that refuses to pass. Though I’m not a history buff, I loved Lecce for its laid-back appeal. The fact that it’s unsung captures your heart pronto.
Beyond churches and museums…
So, if you love visiting ancient churches and museums, Lecce is your city! But, I am not implying that the city is just about churches and museums. Yes, you will perhaps spot a church at every turn you take, but Lecce is beautiful in its nooks and crannies. Since I’m not really a ‘sightseeing’ traveller, I enjoy places that can offer me ‘wonder’ in the ordinary lanes. Lecce turned out to be a kind of city where I’d like to roam around and not have an agenda on mind. It has plenty of attractions for a traveller like me – old walls, pretty lampposts and balconies, vintage doors and windows, quirky cafes and shops, and the aura of ‘slow life’.
Most old buildings in Lecce have a yellow-brownish tint, which makes the city look distinctive. If you appreciate great architecture, Lecce has immensely gorgeous baroque monuments to amaze you! Some of the notable sites that you must visit are the Cathedral at the Duomo Square, Triumphal Arch and the Roman Amphitheatre. But, I wouldn’t recommend you to follow an itinerary. It’d rather be more fun to simply loiter around, take pictures, sip a latte or two and enjoy watching the locals as they go about their businesses.
I’d say Lecce is a must-visit city in Puglia (Southern Italy). It’s a city that can be explored in a day-visit or if you’d like to dig deep into history, make it your base city for your stay in Puglia.
