What’s The Fuss About Christmas?
Don’t get me wrong! I LOVE Christmas. But, I fail to understand the chaos around it. Perhaps it’s the only festival that’s celebrated worldwide with all the fanfare and what not. Even in India, there is an air of excitement around the Christmas time. People throng the markets, bake cakes, decorate the Christmas tree and wait for Santa to hide a gift under it. Of course, I do all that too. Christmas traditions are beautiful without a doubt. But, the meaning behind it is even more precious and beautiful, which is never talked about.
I wonder why is Santa given all the attention while Christmas is meant to be Jesus Christ’s birthday. The world celebrates Christmas just on the surface – the traditions seem to overshadow the message of Christmas.
It’s a bit funny that Christmas is squeezed to something as little as a Santa Claus, while the real essence of the festival is so much bigger. The real joy of Christmas is in the assurance of God to the world that Christ was born to comfort all who mourn, provide for those who grieve — to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair (Isaiah 61 – Bible).
Christmas is so much richer, warmer and sweeter than what it is made out to be. The way it is perceived and presented, it seems so insipid and frivolous. Nobody talks beyond the frills attached to it. I’m not saying that the enthusiasm associated with Christmas is something uncalled for, but it’s high time we dig deeper and find out ‘what’s the fuss about’?
