Tamang House – A Little Home In Gangtok

There was a promise of warmth the moment I checked in at Tamang House. A great hospitality is one thing and a feeling of ‘home away from home’ is another. I experienced the latter at Tamang House.

Tamang House is a cosy home stay in Gangtok, which is run by a Sikkimese couple – Mr and Mrs B. C. Tamang. I stayed there or I should rather say that I made my home there for a couple of days when I arrived in Gangtok.

I stayed in a cute little suite

It was a lovely suite with a lobby, a dining room, a little sitting area, two bedrooms and a bathroom. Well, it was too much for a solo traveller like me, but I enjoyed it. Why complain when you get more than you expect? The beds were clean and well arranged. The rooms had a nice set of lights and lamps that created a cosy atmosphere. As a bonus, one of the rooms had a heater too (though I didn’t need to use it).

I had delicious home-cooked meals

This was the most adorable part of my stay at Tamang House that I got to eat simple, yet delicious meals prepared by the lady of the house – Mrs Tamang. She also included some Sikkimese specialties like Ningro and shared the secret behind the sumptuous rice that they eat – they add local white butter to make the rice taste so rich.

An ideal place for a solo traveller (and also for families and couples)

I’d say Tamang House is an ideal abode for a solo traveller. With such wonderful hosts, I almost felt at home. I chatted quite a bit with Mr and Mrs Tamang. They are a really sweet couple who receives their guests with open arms. I know that’s a clichéd, but that’s the only way to put it.

Tamang House is safe, comfy and a lovely place. Although it’s well-equipped with all the required amenities, I’d not say that it’s too showy. It is a simple home stay to help you miss your home less.

Tamang House is at a walking distance from the very famous MG Marg

Gangtok is a city that can be explored on foot. Of course, there are some areas that are too steep to walk and one gets out of breath soon. But, the more you walk the more you are able to get in touch with the local charms. I enjoyed walking my way up to the MG Marg and while returning, I got a chance to catch a quick glance of the football match that was on at the Paljor Stadium.
