Cochin – A Green Haven
The monsoon in Kerala has more promises of an ‘unimpeded holiday’ than any other expedition to talk about. Drizzle became my constant companion the moment I landed in Cochin; all I could see was burgeoning lush green landscape clad in dark grey clouds. I was all set for a dream holiday – freshness in the air, dewdrops coated leaves and flowers, birds crooning their own tune…It was at one of my friends’ behest that I got to see a paradise like Kerala. She stayed at Aluva, a place a little away from the city, which fortunately got me closer to nature.

When I visit a new place, I try to smell its essence to take back home, and that’s why I guess, it’s advised to travel light. Reverberating raindrops in the quietude of nature can take you into a completely different world! I began on an unassuming note by just sitting in the balcony with a cup of tea and enjoying the comfort and hospitality of my friend. However, as sunshine bumped in, it allowed us to take an excursion to the backwaters of Kerala.

We reached the backwaters by a tour bus, after which we headed for our houseboat that took us around to explore the islands, exotic spices, fruits and more of pristine nature! To say that I was amazed would be an understatement, it was more than I could envisage when I set out for the trip. All I could see was raw and unswerving beauty of nature embracing me from all corners – gorgeous coconut trees fencing the distant green waters, pure heaven-like views to soothe our eyes! It was a kind of intoxication to just sit back with no real inclination for an activity, and experience an escape from the bustle of life.
Our boat was anchored for lunch; a typical south-Indian cuisine was served. It was one of the most scrumptious platters I had ever had. I still have its delectable taste in my mouth.

Later, we experienced a canal ride. I got to discover life on water. People, who live there, have a very basic yet interesting lifestyle. Each resident has his own boat moored at his house to commute within the island. Even the kids travel independently by boat. Women wash clothes and carry out their usual household chores during the day while men are away for fishing or other businesses. I was on one of my most favorite holidays, while the people out there were just living a normal day!
Cochin, being a port city is enamoring in more ways than one. Cattle on the fields, people immersed in simplicity and tradition, not a speck of dust in the air and the landscaped greenery are some of the ingredients that make this city of Kerala a spectacular experience.
